DC++ Quick Start Guide

This quick start guide for DC++ explains on how to get quickly started with DC++.

Getting started

The basic steps for using DC++ are:

  1. Install the DC++ software
  2. Configure the Settings
  3. Use the Search for finding material
  4. Download the files which interest you

Downloading and installing the software

The installation of DC++ is straightforward, just click on OK

Configuring DC++

After starting the DC++ software, click on the Menu File -> Settings

Nickname: most hubs require that the nickname you use start with a specific string. Mainly the hubs ask you to specify your internet connection type, for example [ADSL], [CABLE], [56K], followed by your nickname

Use the Connection Type button to specify your network speed

The other fields in this window can be left as they are

On the Downloads window, you must specify the locations of where you want to store the temporary files and where the completed downloads should be stored. Unless you want to limit the number of downloads you can adjust the "Limits" fields to specify the Download limitations.

Public Hubs List this important field specifies the location of the file containing the list of hubs.

Leave the other fields on this window as is

The last Window you must complete is the Sharing Window, P2P only works if you share files. Use the "Add folder" button to add all the folder you want to share. Most Hubs set a minimum threshold for file sharing, therefore it is recommed to share at least 1GB of files

This completes the configuration of DC++

Hub connections

Before you can search and download you must be connected to one or more hubs, use the "Hubs" button at the bottom of the screen to see the online hubs

Double click on the names of the hubs to connect to them, to have a maximum search result try to be connect to three to four hubs at the same time.

Sometimes connecting to a hub may fail, some of the reasons are

  • Hub is full - try another hub
  • Nickname incorrect or inuse - Change your nickname in the settings window if necessary

The hubs to which you are successfully connected will show up at the bottom of your screen with Green border lines

Searching for Files

Click on the magnifying glass to go to the Search Menu, in the "Search For", enter the text in what interests you

To download a file, simply double click on it's name

Download Status

To review the download status of your files, click on the "Downloads" tab at the bottom of the screen

Under the Column Status you see the current status of the downloads, by right-clicking on a file you can change the priority or search for alternate sources.
