| Avoid Me / I've Gotta Cry | Steve Highfield and Johnny Winter,
recorded in April of 1964 in Johnny's hometown of Beaumont, Texas. Johnny
and his band members harmonize on the
part of the arrangement calling for "Avoid Me" to be sang right
after I sang "Avoid Me." Johnny is playing a Burt Bacharach type
guitar rhythm. About a week or so later, Steve
Highfield returned to the
recording studio with a trio of college girls who over-dubbed on the "I've
Gotta Cry" side
of the record Johnny played on with a "doo-oo-oo-oo.....ah.h.h..h" vocal
choir-like background. (The sound was vintage early 60s.) | |
| Frolic 45-1016 | Gangster of Love / Eternally | Red Label , By late Spring of 1964, his FROLIC record, "Eternally"/"Gangster of Love" was a local Houston hit. Steve HighfieldI had taken it to Garner State Park and used up a jillion dimes playing it over and over. Houston deejays monitored anything being played at the famous park for material to play in the local market, since Garner was an excellent "test" market. (Johnny's single would later be re-released on ATLANTIC RECORDS.) By mid-Summer of '64, my recording "Avoid Me" was installed on the Garner State Park juke box and became popular for a short while. Johnny's "Eternally" ended up on a "Memories of Garner State Park". |
