Reviews

CLAPTON'S first live album for 10 years would be big news anyway. Add to this the fact that his 2001 live performances, from which this set is taken, were his most impressive for years, plus the fact that he suggested it may also be his last big tour, and this looks more and more like an essential release. In many ways, the Clapton of 2001 was as impressive as the Clapton of the classic EC Was Here live album in 1975.

Sure, he was sitting down on stage a lot more, but there was one occasion in his drug and drink problem days when he spent an entire gig lying down on stage with the microphone next to him because he could not stand up. The 2001 tour saw him fully reconnected with the blues (there is a great acoustic Key To The Highway and various other old 12-bar chestnuts). He was also toting some great songs from the Reptile and Pilgrim albums, Father's Eyes, She's Gone and River Of Tears being as good as anything he has ever written.

Clapton was also showing a jazzy new string to his bow, while singing and playing as well as at any time in the last 30 years. A surprisingly good finale to the set, included here, was Somewhere Over The Rainbow. There is a generous smattering of old Clapton favorites too - Badge, Layla, Sunshine Of Your Love, Cocaine and possibly the best version of Have You Ever Loved A Woman you will hear.

Guitar nuts in search of the ultimate tingle quotient are advised to check out that moment, 6mins 34secs into River Of Tears, when the Hammond organ and drum roll crescendo yields to Clapton's final solo. The concert stage was always where you saw Clapton at his best (and, in the bland eighties, also at his worst) and this double CD, out on Monday, catches him on top form.

Reviews

The title of the CD/DVD comes from a fairground ride barker. Eric heard the man calling out, repeatedly, "One more car, one more rider!" to fill the last seat in the last car available for each ride. Liking the rhythm and sound, Clapton decided to use the words as the title of this double CD and DVD

Long respected as one of the best guitarists of his generation, Eric Clapton is the only triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of both The Yardbirds and Cream and as a solo artist).
