Jeremy Steig

Jereme Steig's biography: born 23 September 1942, New York, USA. Steig began on the recorder when he was six, took up the flute aged 11 and first played professionally when he was 15 while he was still at the High School of Music and Art. Early in his career he played in a band including Paul Bley and Gary Peacock. In the late 60s he played with Richie Havens before joining Tim Hardin's backing band and then forming his own rock-influenced band - Jeremy And The Satyrs. Steig has great technical ability on the whole range of flutes on which he employs a wide performance technique. He has been especially adept at incorporating the use of all sorts of electronics into his music-making, employing devices such as the wah wah peddle and ring modulator. He has continued to work as a soloist and with his own groups, although he has also performed with Eddie Gomez, Art Blakey and Pierre Courbois' Association PC in 1974.

It Walter Piston hadn't beat me to It, I'd claim for Jeremy Sleig the sobriquet "The incredible Flutist." The range of colors and feelings he is able to extract from the family of instruments to which he has dedicated himself (no doubles for him: he's a flutist, period) truly give rise to incredulity.

Notes on the Belly Dancer: *Marisa's note: Here is a most unusual addition to Radio Bastet! This album is straight-ahead 70's funk, but according to the liner notes, "Belly Up, Temple Of Birth and Shifte-Telle Mama make up a belly dance suite written for the dancer in Jeremy's group, Daina Shukys. She danced in the studio during the recording of these tunes, recreating the interaction that happens when the group performs live." Far out!
