Movie Plot of: Y tu mamá también

The lives of Julio and Tenoch, like the lives of most seventeen-year old boys, are controlled by their hormones, their friendship, and by their headlong rush into adulthood. During a festive afternoon with their families, they meet Luisa, a twenty-eight year old Spaniard, and flirt with her with all the style and grace seventeen-year old boys are known for. As a joke, they invite her to accompany them on a road trip to a beach called Boca del Cielo ("Heaven's Mouth"), neglecting to mention that they wouldn't know where to find it, even if it did actually exist. Luisa humors the boys, they go their separate ways, and the incident is quickly forgotten. Luisa, however, receives some heartbreaking news, and in need of a change in her environment, tracks the boys down and accepts their offer. The three hit the road together, their destination not so much Boca del Cielo, but that strange, elusive place in our lives where innocence, sexuality, and friendship collide, and adulthood lies in wait to pick up the pieces. With the intimate, personal story of Y tu mamá también (2001) director Alfonso Cuarón and his collaborator, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (who together gave us Little Princess, A (1995) and Great Expectations (1998)) combine their acclaimed visual poetry with raucous laughter, searing eroticism and ultimately, a profound sadness for a particular moment time, and how it was lived, and lost.

Reviews of the movie: Y tu mamá también

Plenty of juicy "s" words apply to And Your Mother Too: sexy, sweet, subtle, sad, surprising, superb... and did we say sexy? With enough male and female nudity to qualify as softcore porn--but deserving none of the stigma attached to that label--this vibrant coming-of-age road movie is guaranteed to jumpstart any viewer's libido. Frank treatment of its characters' burgeoning sexuality makes this unrated film a real eye-opener, but it's never prurient or juvenile. Rather, the three-way odyssey of two 17-year-old Mexican boys (Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna) and a 28-year-old Spanish beauty (Maribel Verdú) is energetic and affirmative, while acknowledging that relationships--and sexual adventures--rarely develop without a hitch or two (or three). Filmed in sequence by Alfonso Cuarón (Great Expectations), and shot with invigorating natural style, this refreshing comedy-drama employs an omniscient narrator to reflect upon precious stolen moments, weaving three lives into a memorable tapestry of fun, friendship, and fat

"Y Tu Mama Tambien" caused some controversy in Mexico, where it was screened early this year. It was often said to be a Mexican version of "Porky's," full of unnecessary sex scenes. It still broke the record for highest-grossing Mexican film, selling out in 190 movie theatres on its seventh week, although because of its sexual content and depiction of teenagers, it was R-rated. Funny, it is the kind of film I would have loved to see as a teenager.

With their girlfriends off to Italy, two hormone-ridden teenagers, Tenoch (Diego Luna) and Julio (Gael Garcia Bernal), become infatuated with Luisa (Maribel Verdu), an "older" woman of 28 married to an obnoxious writer. Together, the two boys and the woman venture into a delightful exploration of sexual identity and intimacy.

Tenoch is the son of a wealthy but corrupt politician and a frivolous high-society lady. Julio has been raised by a single mother, in a more humble, middleclass environment. His sister is a left-wing activist in Mexico City. Luisa is an orphan from Spain, married to one of Tenoch's cousins. During their first meeting at an impressive Mexican wedding (with the president and his bodyguards in attendance), Luisa humors the boys who invite her to spend a few days camping at a beach called "Boca del Cielo" (Heaven's Mouth) - a name they make up on the spot. But soon after she receives some heartbreaking news, she decides to accept the boys' invitation. And so the film begins.

"Y Tu Mama Tambien" (translated from Spanish as "And Your Mother Too," but connoting "I screwed your mother too") is a funny, provocative, sexy journey into intimacy set in Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world.

Alfonso Cuaron ("Little Princess," "Great Expectations") handles the talented cast with exquisite realism. Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal are especially credible as the two teens struggling to find their identity, even if it means risking their lifelong friendship in the process. Maribel Verdu is an outstanding actress, although her character tends to slow the pace of the film with unnecessary melodrama.

Shooting in sequence and with only natural light, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki ("Little Princess," "Sleepy Hollow") gives the film the natural feeling it demands. With this "road movie," writers Alfonso and Carlos Cuaron take us by the hand through not only the hilarious adventures and misadventures of this unlikely group, but, with the help of a narrator, we're also offered the sociopolitical context in which the characters live.

Full of sex, drugs and ingeniously funny scenes (and not yet rated), "Y Tu Mama Tambien is an important look at a world full of contradictions. We have all been there . . . or at least we all know someone who has.
