Reviews of the movie: There Is Something About Mary
There's Something About Mary is one of the funniest movies in years, recalling the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that cowriters and codirectors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content. The Farrelly brothers' first two movies, Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, had some moments of uproarious raunch, but were uneven. With Mary, they've created a consistently hilarious romantic comedy, made all the funnier by the fact that you know that they know that some of their gags go way over the line.
Cameron Diaz stars as Mary, every guy's ideal. Ben Stiller plays a high-school suitor still hung up on Mary years later; the obstacles standing between him and her include a number of psychotic suitors, a miserable little pooch, and, oh yeah, a murder charge. The Farrellys' admittedly simplistic camera work, which adapts easily to a TV screen, and the fact that you'll likely laugh yourself so silly over certain scenes you'll want to replay them to see what you were missing while you were busy convulsing, make this a perfect video movie
et me tell you, as I read these reviews, I am surprised
as hell that not one guy has mentioned how unbelievably, more-than-humanly-possible
HOT Cameron Diaz is!! I had never seen her in a movie before this, but after
I did, I absolutely fell in love with her!! She plays the role of Mary (obviously),
a woman who embodies what most men think the perfect female should be. She
is kind, sweet, funny, honest, and...(did I mention) hotter than all hell!!!
God! you gotta just love that smile of hers!
Anyway...about the movie. This is unquestionably the funniest thing Hollywood
(or Ben Stiller) has put out in a long, long while. Everyone knows the gag
at the beginning of the movie, and it is just as funny (funnier!) than you
thought it would be when you saw the commercial. You actually get to see part
of what happened if you know what I mean. Matt Dillon is great as the wacky
private eye hired by Stiller to find Mary, who he hasn't seen since prom night.
Dillon finds her and quickly falls in love with Mary himself! He then procedes
to try and win her over, making a fool out of himself over and over again with
some lines that will have you slapping your knee no matter how many times you
see this! All hell breaks loose when Stiller, having not heard back from Dillon
on Mary's whereabouts, goes after her himself. Every guy in Florida seemingly
is trying to gain Mary's attention!
To sum up, see this movie. Even if you absolutely hate comedies, hell, even
if you think that movies are of the devil or something, see this if only for
one reason, and that is this: Cameron Diaz is THE hottest woman that has ever
graced the earth (let alone a movie screen) with her presence!!!!! I saw her
on Letterman promoting Vanilla Sky and she was hot even there, just talking
to Dave! Hell, I even saw Charlie's Angels KNOWING that it was one of the worst
movies ever, just because she was in it!! Oh yeah, and this is the greatest
comedy I have seen in quite a while, so go see it! NOW!!
The Farrelly Brothers' Do It Again.
In the tradition of "Dumb & Dumber" comes the equally hilarious and demented "There's Something About Mary". Ben Stiller stars as a loser who wonders what might have been after he was unable to go to the prom with his true love Mary (Cameron Diaz). The reason he cannot go is an important part of the movie in itself. Fast-forward a few years and Stiller continues to think of Diaz. Of course he enlists the help of slimy private investigator Matt Dillon to find her, but a problem occurs: Dillon falls in love with Diaz. This creates a problem for Lee Evans who plays a scholar in front of Diaz but is really a simple pizza delivery man. What follows are crazy situations and oh yes, don't forget Stiller's friend Chris Elliott who has a secret of his own. The film is just amazing in its ability to make the audience laugh. Every gag works to perfection and the whole film is a test to get through because you are laughing so hard that you might miss the next gag which is coming up. The jokes come in a constant wave and the whole film is just so comical that few can question the achievement of the
