Synopsis of the DVD Movie: Starsky & Hutch starring Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller (2004)

Set in the 1970s in a metropolis called "Bay City," this is the tale of two police detective partners, Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Owen Wilson), and Dave Starsky (Ben Stiller), who always seem to get the toughest cases from their boss, Captain Dobey, rely on omniscient street informer Huggy Bear (Dogg) and race to the scene of the crimes in their souped-up 1974 Ford Torino hot rod, telling the story of their first big case (as a prequel to the TV show), which involved a former college campus drug dealer (Vaughn) who went on to become a white collar criminal (Electra plays Hutch's girlfriend).

Movie Plot of: Starsky & Hutch

Reborn in the bodies of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, charismatic crime fighters, Dave Starsky and Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson - whose hit television show starring Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul initially ran from 1975-79 - have, inevitably, come to the big screen. Starsky & Hutch is a prequel to the series, telling the story of how their unlikely partnership came about.

Dedicated detective, Starsky (Ben Stiller) is a cop trying to live up to the illustrious reputation of a parent - in this case, his mother who was considered one of the best cops on the streets of Bay City, California. He tries so hard, in fact, that he has gone through a series of partners who can’t keep up with his kind of exhausting, fanatical police work.

Hutch (Owen Wilson), on the other hand, although a good cop, is too laid back for his own good and doesn’t always remember which side of the law he’s on. Exasperated Police Captain, Harold Dobey (Fred Williamson) thinks Starsky needs some calming down and Hutch needs some focus and by teaming up his two problem detectives he believes he has come up with a perfect solution. It might seem like a doomed mismatch but come on, we know it has to work out otherwise how did they go and make all those TV episodes!

Their first case involves sadistic drug dealer, Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn) who, with his right had man, Kevin (Jason Bateman) is pushing a strain of cocaine that is undetectable by taste or smell.

Playing the guys’ streetwise informant, Huggy Bear is Snoop Dogg and other cast members include Juliette Lewis as Kitty, Reese’s loyal, naïve mistress and Carmen Electra and Amy Smart as cheerleaders, Staci and Holly who are attracted to the soon-to-be dynamic duo.

When the boys begin to settle into each other’s policing methods, the partnership takes off and Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson make a great team. A funny sequence involves their interview of a jailbird - played by an unbilled Will Ferrell - who has some odd requests before he will talk. Another is a Saturday Night Fever-ish moment that occurs after Starsky has mistaken the odourless cocaine for coffee sweetener.

Fans of the original will enjoy a couple of droll touches when Hutch tries to impress Staci and Holly with a song, and a nudge-nudge, wink-wink, final moment involving Starsky’s treasured red and white Ford Torino.

Reviews of the movie: Starsky & Hutch

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vince Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vince Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen
