The Griswold family, father Clark W., wife Ellen, daughter Audrey and son Rusty, set out in high spirit to spend their vacation driving cross-country from Chicago to a glorious climax in Walley World on the West Coast. The trip which Clark planned down to the minute, slowly loses its smoothness from the moment the first grain of sand gets in. A meeting with constantly-in-debt, simple-minded cousin Eddie results in the Griswold family giving cantankerous aunt Edna a lift to Phoenix. Of course, the Griswolds receive one strike of bad luck after another, and when they finally arrive at Walley World, they have to find out that the park is closed for maintenance. But Clark promised his beloved family the best vacation ever...

Reviews of the movie: National Lampoon's Vacation - Chevy Chase
Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch
First of the Vacation movies is by far the best. Truly original and very funny. I was laughing so hard the first time I saw this I hurt myself. Film chronicles the summer vacation of Clark Griswald and family on their sojourn from Chicago--the Windy City--to WallyWorld, California--a ficticious amusement park, sort of a cross between Disneyland and 6 Flags Magic Mountain (where the park sequences were filmed). The hard working and earnest Clark decides to take his family in the "family truckster" to California, making the pilgrimage to everyone's favorite amusement park, WallyWorld. Every calamity imaginable happens along the way, e.g., wife Bev Dangelo loses her suitcase containing birth control devices, an aunt dies, the aunt's poor dog is left tied to the back of the car, the car is wrecked. However, along the way we get to see Bev Dangelo naked in the shower, Clark's fling with Christie Brinkley, and many historic and amusing sites along the way. John Candy has a great cameo at the end of the film. Film is funny from beginning to end.
A 'Vacation' worth taking! [spoilers included]
I saw NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION on TBS one night and since then rented it
probably over one hundred times. It is one of my favorite movies. It's about
a man named Clark [Chevy Chase] who takes his family on a road trip to an
amusement park called Wally World. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong
in this hilarious classic. The movie is followed by four sequels: EUROPEAN
VACATION, CHRISTMAS VACATION, VEGAS VACATION, and AMERICAN ADVENTURE. None
of the sequels are as good as this one, but they still are pretty funny.
