Synopsis of the DVD Movie: Jurassic Park: The Lost World

A few years back, venture capitalist John Hammond figured out how to recreate dinosaurs from DNA fragments encased in amber. He started a company called InGen, which placed the genetically engineered dinosaurs in a theme park on an island in Costa Rica.

But the Jurassic Park systems broke down shortly before it could open, the dinosaurs got free and had to be destroyed, and the island was closed to the public.

In the aftermath, everyone involved moved quickly to quash the story. InGen wanted to limit its liability. The Costa Rican government wanted to preserve its reputation as a tourist paradise. And the individual scientists who had been hired as consultants on the project were bound by nondisclosure agreements to remain silent.

But as Dr. Ian Malcolm is about to find out ...

SOMETHING HAS SURVIVED

The Lost World: Jurassic Park is the sequel to Steven Spielberg's 1993 film recounting events on a Costa Rican island inhabited by genetically-engineered dinosaurs, which broke all box-office records and showcased an emerging visual effects technology.

Based on the novel by Michael Crichton, the story picks up four years after the disaster at Jurassic Park. Something has survived on Isla Sorna, a second island where the dinosaur manufacturing facility code-named Site B has been destroyed by a hurricane and the animals now run free, constrained only by the laws of nature.

Movie Plot of: Jurassic Park: The Lost World

THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK is director Steven Spielberg’s sequel to his original dinosaur thriller. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) returns for more dino-horror when, four years after the disaster at the would-be amusement park, another expedition is mounted by millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). To document the natural behavior of the beasts at a mysterious Site B, Hammond sends a team comprising Malcolm; Malcolm's girlfriend, paleontologist Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore); and a wildlife videographer (Vince Vaughn). They face adversity in the form of a less-than-scrupulous big-game hunter (Pete Postlethwaite) and, of course, the terrible lizards themselves. The film is loosely based on Michael Crichton’s novel THE LOST WORLD, which was named after the 1912 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel of the same name. Spielberg proved his determination to alternate making socially conscious films with directing movies of sheer entertainment value; his prior film to THE LOST WORLD was SCHINDLER’S LIST, and he followed the dinosaur adventure with AMISTAD.

Reviews of the movie: Jurassic Park: The Lost World

Once again we have a visit to the island of the dinosaurs by a scientific team who expects to exploit their discoveries. They know what they're doing, they assure us (ironically?). The computer generated images have been improved. But a larger expedition arrives to capture the wild lizards and create a zoo in San Diego (remind you of 'King Kong'?). There seems to be an anti-hunting message in some of these scenes, Its OK for reptiles, but not for mammals?

Of course, another wonderful plan goes awry due to unforeseen events. The small group sabotages the efforts of the larger group (professional rivalry?). As if they don't have enough problems, a small wounded lizard is brought inside for treatment. But there wouldn't be any drama without these missteps. This story seems incredible in spots, but I'm not a biologist. The action is a true cliff-hanger! This climb for life is the most riveting scene.

The destruction of the camp forces the survivors to a long day's journey to the old settlement. One straggler gets lost to create an episode of horror. More problems occur crossing the grassy meadow at night; do the lights attract predators? The refuge at the settlement becomes a trap. But they escape, and are rescued by a helicopter! The military arrive, like the Cavalry in bygone Westerns, to rescue the remaining survivors.

A ship arrives in San Diego, with no live humans. (Does this recall a scene from 'Dracula'?) And so the captured Tyrannosaurus arrives without a visa, another immigrant in Southern California. This one won't disappear easily! The scenes with the dinosaur running wild in the streets is technically impressive. In the end the financier is used to teach the young dinosaur to hunt for its food, another ironic ending. The final interview warns against interfering with nature. Is this an argument against cloning and stem cell research?
