Reviews of the movie: The Hot Chick
It's no surprise that The Hot Chick is stupid; what's remarkable is the ambition of its stupidity. After a hokey, Mummy-like prologue to establish the body-switching spell cast by an ancient pair of Abyssinian earrings, the low-concept lunacy begins when those earrings are divided, eons later, between a cruel-minded high school campus queen (Rachel McAdams) and a small-time crook (Rob Schneider), who switch bodies (externally he's the hot chick, and she's the vulgar sleazeball) and must cope with the consequences of their sudden gender crisis. This tired idea may seem fresh and funny to eight-year-olds and morons, but Schneider and first-time director Tom Brady (who wrote Schneider's The Animal) fail to fulfill the potential of their ripe comedic premise. McAdams plays a guy better than Schneider plays a girl (which explains her limited screen time), and the expected jokes (mostly involving urinals and awkward prom dates) are sluggishly uninspired. In a cameo role as a dreadlocked stoner, coproducer Adam Sandler offers only brief comedic respite.
I just got back from a sneak preview of this movie and while I can't quite say that I enjoyed it as much as some of Rob Schneider's other movies such as DEUCE BIGALOW: MALE GIGALO and THE ANIMAL, I still found it to be a hilarious flick. In the 1980s, movies about body-switching could be found almost every other month, but after the 80s ended, so did the body-switching genre. This movie will hopefully give new life to the genre since it serves as a good reminder of how funny these kinds of movies are. I loved this movie, though it should be said that if you don't like Rob Schneider or crude humor, you won't like this movie. This movie is all about Rob Schneider and crude humor, which in my opinion, is a great combination. There are jokes in this movie that will offend almost everyone, but what do you expect from a movie that is executive produced by Adam Sandler? Speaking of Adam Sandler, if you have seen the trailers for this movie, you probably already know he has a cameo in it. While the cameo seemed funny in the trailer, I found it to not quite fit in the actual movie. It was just one of those things that I think should have been left on the cutting room floor along with some other scenes because 101 minutes for a comedy is just a little bit too long. Anyway, overall I'd give the movie three stars. Go see it when it comes out next Friday.
Jessica Spencer (Rachel MacAdams) is, like, the hottest chick in high school - head cheerleader, best bod, widest smile, niftiest wardrobe, richest parents, yeah, she's all that. But she's a bitch to anyone less popular than herself, so when circumstances prevail that leave her trapped in the body of a 30-year-old gas-station knock-over artist (Rob Schneider), she finally gets a taste of what she's been dishing out: Her friends mace her and beat on her when she turns up, ugly and unshaven, to seek their aid in getting that bod back. S/he has to pretend to be her parents' Mexican gardener, thus gaining some insights into their collapsing marriage (while fending off the amorous advances of her own mom), and masculinity proves handy for overhearing revelatory boy-talk in the men's locker room. And Jessica's best friend April likes her sooo much more now that she's sporting a dick . . . Schneider's third comic outing, directed by Tom Brady (a Harvard alumnus, you'll be pleased to learn), marks no discernible improvement on its predecessors Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo and The Animal, though the sight of the deeply unprepossessing Rob Schneider all dolled up for girlie business is good for a few shallow chuckles.
