Film plot en Francais: C'est en 1862, dans la ville de New York à feu et à sang, que l'histoire retrace le face à face d'un caïd retors, défendant la place des "Américains natifs", et du fils d'un prêtre d'origine irlandaise qui a été tué seize ans auparavant lors d'une guerre des gangs. Entre la fin de la guerre d'indépendance et les débuts de la guerre de Sécession, la nation américaine est encore embryonnaire et New York est sous l'emprise de redoutables gangs qui se battent entre eux pour affirmer leur suprématie. Ainsi se forment et se confrontent des clans regroupant les nouveaux immigrants, essentiellement originaires d'Irlande, et les natifs américains, le tout sur fond d'émeutes anti-conscription. Film plot in English: The film begins in 1846 and quickly jumps to the early 1860s. The two principal issues of the era in New York were Irish immigration to the city and the Federal government's execution of the Civil War. The story follows Bill "The Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis) in his roles as crime boss and political kingmaker under the helm of Boss Tweed (Jim Broadbent). The film culminates in a confrontation between Cutting and his mob with the protagonist Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his immigrant allies, which coincides with the New York Draft Riots of 1863. |
